Simon Berry

Despite having represented his country at the highest level throughout the twenty first century, Beverley's Simon Berry is preparing for the biggest challenge of his life. Since the announcement of London's successful Olympic bid, Simon has made it his mission to ensure qualification for the Great British Sledge Hockey Team at next years Winter Olympics.

Simons build up preparations include representing England in the annual England verses Wales grudge match on the 21 st August in Cardiff and playing in the Paralympic Qualifiers in Italy in November.

Sledge hockey is a variant of ice hockey, where because of the equipment involved, both disabled and abled body players can compete on equal terms. Simon says, "Sledge is a sport that detaches you from your wheelchair, unlike other disabled team sports. You are free from your disability while playing on the ice!"

As one of Sledge Hockey's most consistent performers, Simon is looking forward to the challenge of representing his country in front of a global TV audience. Whilst he's realistically recognises that Britain medal chances are low compared to the likes of Canada and America, his main aim for the Paralympics is to ensure that the GB team is respected by other sports teams and countries.
