The Cardiff Huskies are arguable Britain’s longest established Sledge Hockey team and it is with great pleasure that the British Sledge Hockey Association (BSHA) welcomes them as an affiliated ice and inline sledge hockey club with immediate effect.
On Thursday 16th May 2011 representatives of BSHA, Cardiff Huskies Sledge Hockey Club, Cardiff City Council and Disability Sport Wales met ahead of the Cardiff Wheelchair Sports Spectacular and resolved to work together with a view to the Cardiff Huskies competing in the BSHA National League from the 2012 season.
Matt Lloyd, Chairman of the BSHA said, “It’s fantastic that the Huskies have chosen to affiliate to the British Sledge Hockey Association. Although the Huskies have been established for a number of years, since Turin 2006 they have been in decline and it is great to see the commitment from the Huskies, Cardiff City Council and Disability Sport Wales to ensure that Sledge Hockey is available to everyone in South Wales. As a national governing body it is rewarding that the Huskies are showing that they believe in the work the BSHA is undertaking to ensure that our sport is run in a robust, transparent and fair way and that they are committed to being part of the development of Sledge Hockey”.
Russell Willey, Huskies spokesperson said, “For many years sledge hockey in the UK has been a sport that has never achieved its full potential. The changes in the organisational set up of the sport in the UK over the past two years however are exciting and provide an opportunity for the Cardiff Huskies by affiliation to be valued stakeholders in a proactive organisation that has attracted a great deal of support and is able to offer the club the opportunity to build a sustainable Sledge Hockey programme in South Wales”.
The Cardiff Huskies will be on Ice at the Cardiff Bay Ice Rink each Sunday at 4.30pm until September when Ice Time will move to 9.30pm, directly after Devils games. Plans are being put into place to set up in-line Sledge Hockey in the closed season to enable maximum participation by all age groups.
