Players asked to give views on their clubs

BSHA LogoThe BSHA are currently surveying the views and opinions of players.

The survey that has been developed has been written to allow the BSHA to further understand what players of the game in the UK experience as part of their club so that we are able to engage with stakeholders, support development and assist in securing funding.

We would like to hear from players at all levels of the sport. If you are just starting to play, at a new club, playing in a league or part of the National squad, we need to know your thoughts.

The survey can be found here: http://survey.mdsc.co.uk/limesurvey/index.php?sid=64271&lang=en

Manchester Phoenix Debut

Phoenix Sledge Hockey TeamManchester Phoenix sledge hockey team made their debut at the Dome on Saturday with games against Peterborough Phantoms and Kingston Kestrels.

Phoenix will be joining the British Sledge Hockey League next season and the games were to gauge the development of the team and to introduce a dimension of hockey new to many fans.

Game 1: Manchester Phoenix 5 Peterborough Phantoms 1

Phoenix iced for the first time against a game Phantoms team. Dan Breen in goal kept the eager Manchester outfit at bay on numerous occasions but a hat trick from GB player Karl Nicholson gave the delighted home team the win.

Game 2: Kingston Kestrels 13 Peterborough Phantoms 1

The newly-crowned sledge hockey league champions proved too strong for the Phantoms outfit in the second game and ran out convincing winners. Huge credit was due to the relatively inexperienced Peterborough team who fought bravely for the whole 30 minutes.

Game 3: Manchester Phoenix 1 Kingston Kestrels 5

The final game of the day saw the home side take on the best team in the country and although going down by 4 goals, Phoenix showed plenty of promise and enterprise and one doubts if we will see a similar scoreline next time they meet.

3 goals from Matt Clarkson and one each from Berry and Warner completed the Kestrels’ scoring. However the biggest cheer of the night came when Karl Nicholson scored the home goal.

A reasonable crowd saw fast, skilful, entertaining hockey all afternoon and many left saying they cannot wait for the next event.

Phoenix coach Pete Hagan said after the games: “I am really happy with the way the team performed today. We have only been together for 12 weeks and some players started from scratch. A huge thanks to everybody who played or helped with the organisation of the day. The future of sledge hockey in Manchester looks bright.”

Phoenix press officer Jim Piper caught up with Great Britain player and 3 time Paralympic competitor Karl Nicholson after the games and he had this to say: “Today was a good day for everybody involved in the Phoenix Organisation. We only came together 3 months ago and the progress made is astonishing. The Kestrels have been together for more than 20 years and I think we acquitted ourselves very well in that game. They are deserved league champions but Phoenix have definitely designs on the title soon.”

A great day’s entertainment with sledge hockey winning over some new fans. Many thanks to the officials and all who turned up and gave their time to the event. There was a collection at the game to raise funds for the GB team who have an Olympic qualifying event soon and to boost the coffers of the Manchester team.

A sledge is not just for winter

There is such a thing as sledge hockey. Manchester Phoenix are pleased to announce their home debut in British Sledge Hockey at the Altrincham Ice Dome on Saturday 11th August.

Now what is this sledge hockey malarkey? I hear you ask.

Two men from Sweden invented the game in the 1960’s because they wanted to continue to play ice hockey despite their physical disabilities. The sled was designed to include two skate blades on a metal frame that allowed the puck to pass underneath. Two poles with bike handles for sticks and you still have the same basic design today.

Competition for real started up in 1971 with 5 European teams. GB established their first team in 1981 and Canada in 1982. The game was introduced into the Paralympics in 1994 and is now a major sport in the Winter Paralympic Games.

The game has developed immeasurably with the sport now totally inclusive, open also to able bodied players, incorporating mixed teams and has taken off at club level in Britain.

Planet Ice will be sponsoring the British Sledge Hockey League and will have teams from Kingston, Peterborough, The Battle Back Bison ( consisting of injured military personnel) and our very own Manchester Phoenix.

Saturday will showcase games between all teams and with players from all over the country, Phoenix will be doing their best to give the home crowd something to shout about.

The brand new Phoenix squad, coached by Pete Hagan, have current and former GB players in the line up.

Not only is this Phoenix’s first ever game, the weekend is also important in the build-up and preparation of the GB team for the 2014 Paralympics.

The action kicks off at 1600 hrs and is FREE.

If you are missing your hockey and need a fix, come down on Saturday and support your club’s latest venture.

It is sure to be a fun day with something completely different for many. The dedication and skill will surprise you and the entertainment value amazing.

See you at the Dome

Sledge Hockey World Championships Pool B Announced

Captain Mark BriggsThe International Paralympic Committee (IPC) announced on Wednesday (1 August) that Novi Sad, Serbia will play host to the 2012 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey B Pool World Championships from 12-17 November.

Organized by Serbia’s National Paralympic Committee, the B Pool championships will feature the second tier of the world’s top teams, and all action will take place at the Sports and Business Centre Vojvodina in Novi Sad.

Xavier Gonzalez, IPC Chief Executive Officer, said: “After a successful A Pool World Championships in Norway in April earlier this year, we are very excited to have Serbia host the B Pool World Championships and help Ice Sledge Hockey’s next tier of teams develop and rise to the top of the sport.”

This will be the third edition of the B Pool championships, with the most recent event taking place with five teams in Eindhoven, the Netherlands in 2009, when Estonia defeated Sweden in the gold-medal game for the title.

Host city Novi Sad is the second largest city in Serbia with a population of around 300,000 people. The arena, which opened in 1981, holds a capacity for 3,000 spectators and was remodeled in 2005. It has played host to several major European basketball and table tennis events.

Bojan Jacimovic, Secretary General of Serbia’s National Paralympic Committee, said: “This competition is very important for development of winter Paralympic sports in Serbia. I believe that Novi Sad is going to be a great host because it fulfills all conditions for hosting a competition of these proportions, and I also think that we have a more than capable staff for handling this competition.”

The top two finishers from the B Pool world championships in Serbia will earn the right to move up to the A Pool for 2013 and compete in next April’s A Pool World Championships in Goyang City, Korea.

Kestrels player to carry the Olympic Torch

On the 18th July 2012 Sledge Hockey player Matt Woollias will carry the Olympic Torch as part of the build up towards the London 2012 Olympic games. Matt Woollias will carry the Torch as 2:20 in Filey and will be supported by his friends and family.
Matt was discovered at a British Paralympic Association Talent ID day where he demonstrated his raw talent and ability.
Since then he has gone on to be one of the rising stars of the 2011 Planet Ice League winners, the Kingston Kestrels and is part of the GB squad with aspirations to make his GB debut at the IPC 2012 Pool B Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships.
Matthew’s nomination story

“Matthew was diagnosed with a rare case of bone cancer (Ewings Sarcoma) in May 2009 in his second year at University. His treatment involved not only chemotherapy but also the impossible decision to have his leg amputated below his knee to facilitate his recovery further. Whilst undergoing his chemotherapy Matt amazingly began fundraising for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

He has so far organised fundraisers at local pubs (which had raffles and auctions), a ball (with a second to follow in July) at the KC Stadium as well as several charity football matches one being against a team of ex Hull City Players. I feel his most astounding achievement is completing a 10 k run only a few months after having his leg amputated and only 2 months after finishing his chemotherapy, he completed his second race this year. Through all of his various events Matthew has raised £17,000 which is an amazing achievement considering the little amount of time since his diagnosis.

I think the most inspirational thing about Matt is how he has dealt with his illness, he has never complained what has happened to him and managed to see the positive in the whole situation. He has also supported friends through their own life trauma`s. Since finishing his treatment he has completed his 3rd year at University throwing himself back into his study and sport teams related to the university. Matt has finished all of his exams and will be graduating with a higher second (2:1) degree.”

Request from Chairman of BPA

Hi All

Many of you have come across me over the years and I am fondly known as “the blind man with the gorgeous guide dog “V”. I am one of the fortunate ones who have lost sight but with a great network and support from our organisation and my work colleagues to be able maintain a normal and rewarding career. I was fortunate enough to go on holiday to Kenya in October last year and came across some truly wonderful people and was shocked to find out that kids are dying just because they have cataracts and that their parents are not able to support them and had to make a heartbreaking decision to abandon them and leave them to die. It costs just £150 per child to operate and successfully remove them. But for many there ability to pay for this is far beyond their reach.

With this in mind I am embarking on doing the Blenheim Triathlon on June 10th this year in aid of sports relief. Many of the people I met had nothing, not even clean water to drink in their villages thus many more kids are dying because they have no choice but to drink contaminated water.

I know we can’t change the world but I would be really grateful for your support no matter how small to help raise a little towards this cause . My link is below

GB Sledge Hockey to carry the Olympic Flame

Matt LloydThe British Sledge Hockey Association (BSHA) is proud to announce that their chairman, retried GB player and Paralympian, Matt Lloyd, has been nominated to carry the Olympic Torch by Sport England. Additionally up and coming Kingston Kestrels and GB squad member Matthew Woollias has been nominated for his work in raising awareness of teenage cancer.

Lloyd made his debut for GB Ice Sledge Hockey in the Turin qualification tournament in 2005 and then went on to represent Great Britain at every event in which they have participated in since. Additionally he played Sitting Volleyball for Great Britain at international level including featuring as part of the team that participated in the 2007 IPC European Sitting Volleyball Championships.

Lloyd said, “It’s a great honour to be nominated and I know that Birmingham Sport and Physical Activity Partnership were the organisation really pushing for recognition of the work I’ve done to provide inclusive sport opportunities. I lived a pretty nomadic life and so it is a real honour that the people of Birmingham wish to claim me as one of their own. Sport is a great catalyst for change and I hope that I can contribute in some small way by providing people with the opportunity to chance their lives for the better. I find it rewarding that Matt Woollias has also been selected to carry the torch as I remember introducing him to the sport of Sledge Hockey through a British Paralympic Association Talent ID day in Guildford last year”.

Matt WoolliasWoolias was diagnosed with a rare case of bone cancer in May 2009 in his second year at University. His treatment involved not only chemotherapy but also the impossible decision to have his leg amputated below his knee to facilitate his recovery further. Whilst undergoing his chemotherapy Matt began fundraising for the Teenage Cancer Trust and has so far organised local fundraising events and presented at national conferences.

Woolias made his sledge hockey debut playing as part of the league winning Kingston Kestrels and is about to take part in his first European event, the Sportlife Open in Eindhoven.

GB Head Coach, Andy Linton said, “Matthew (Woollias) is a promising young player who has made the step up from league player to being part of the GB squad in a relatively short space of time. If he continues to develop both on and off the ice then I have no doubt that he will soon represent GB at the highest levels of the sport”.
